Did the sands of time ever whisper tales of valor and sacrifice? Here, at the Sayed Al-Shuhada Mosque, they speak volumes. This mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a poignant echo of the Battle of Uhud, a pivotal moment in Islamic history. The Sayed Al-Shuhada Mosque stands as a testament to the seventy companions of Prophet Muhammad who fell in that battle. Completed in April 2017, the mosque’s modern architecture embraces a rich past. Its vast 54,000 square meter expanse can hold up to 15,000 worshippers. Outside, supporting facilities cater to every need. The mosque faces Mount Rumat, a smaller hill west of Mount Uhud. From Rumat’s peak, you can glimpse Uhud Martyr’s Square and its landmarks. The Battle of Uhud unfolded in the third Hijri year. The Quraysh tribe, seeking revenge for their losses at Badr, marched on Medina. Prophet Muhammad positioned archers on Mount Rumat, commanding them to hold their position. As the Quraysh retreated, the archers, believing victory was theirs, abandoned their posts. Khalid bin Al-Walid, then a commander for the Quraysh, seized this opportunity. He led a surprise attack against the descending archers and the remaining Muslims. Seventy companions, including Prophet Muhammad’s uncle, Hamzah bin Abdul-Muttalib, perished. They were laid to rest here, at the battle site, beneath Mount Rumat’s watchful gaze. Today, visitors follow in Prophet Muhammad’s footsteps, visiting these sacred graves and ascending Mount Rumat to reflect on the battle’s significance. The Sayed Al-Shuhada Mosque serves as a timeless reminder of their sacrifice.
