“This mosque looks like it has a giant Russian Easter egg on top!” the young boy exclaimed. His laughter echoed through the courtyard as his parents chuckled at his observation. He’s not wrong. The Masjid Abu Darweesh, completed in 1962, is a unique sight. Its striking black and white brickwork, alternating in stripes across the main prayer hall and the outer walls, does indeed resemble a roadway turned into a building. The dome, a key feature of the Masjid Abu Darweesh, continues this unusual design. The black and white bricks are arranged in a diamond-shaped pattern, creating the illusion of a giant Russian Easter egg. This distinctive design element extends even to the multi-layered crown of the minaret. This mosque certainly stands out amongst Amman’s architectural gems. While not the largest mosque in Amman, the Masjid Abu Darweesh holds a special place as a testament to modern architectural expression within a traditional context. Sadly, this beautiful space is only open to Muslims. But its beauty can be appreciated by all who pass by.
