Construction began in 1986, involving 10,000 artisans and craftsmen from all over Morocco. The mosque can accommodate an astounding 105,000 worshippers, 25,000 inside and 80,000 on the outside grounds. The main prayer hall is breathtaking. Light floods in through the retractable roof, which can be opened in a mere five minutes, revealing the night sky. The Hassan II Mosque isn’t just a place of worship. Outside, the courtyard features 41 beautifully decorated fountains, and the surrounding gardens are a popular spot for families. Dominating the Casablanca skyline is the mosque’s minaret, the tallest in the world at 210 meters. A laser beam, directed towards Mecca, shines from its peak each night, a beacon of faith visible for 30 kilometers.
