Twenty thousand worshippers. Can you imagine? That’s the capacity of Al Rajhi Grand Mosque. We stand before this architectural marvel a testament to faith and generosity. This magnificent mosque wasn’t built overnight. It replaced an older mosque. Its construction was primarily funded by the Saudi businessman Sulaiman bin Abdulaziz Al-Rajhi. He is a billionaire and a philanthropist. His name is now synonymous with this house of prayer.
Al Rajhi Grand Mosque boasts Andalusian Moorish Revival architecture. Its single dome soars 37 meters high. Two minarets reach for the sky at 55 meters. The interior spans an impressive 13260 square meters. The mosque opened its doors in 2004. Its inauguration was a significant event. The then-governor of Riyadh Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz presided over the ceremony.
The mosque quickly became a central hub for the community. However its success wasn’t without its challenges. Soon after its opening street vendors transformed its eastern parking lot into a bustling marketplace. This caused overcrowding and disorder. The Al-Riyadh daily newspaper reported the issue. The mosque’s library opened a year later. It initially housed around 3000 books. By 2013 this collection grew to a substantial 16000 books and 47000 volumes. The library is a testament to the mosque’s commitment to religious scholarship. It serves as a resource for the community.
Al Rajhi Grand Mosque played a role in significant events. It hosted the funeral prayers for prominent figures. Saleh bin Abdulaziz al-Rajhi founder of Al Rajhi Bank passed away in 2011. His funeral was held here. In 2012 the mosque also hosted the funeral prayers for Mohamed bin Abdulaziz al-Rajhi. He was Saleh’s and Sulaiman’s brother. These events cemented the mosque’s standing in the city.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused a temporary closure. The mosque shut down in March 2020. This was in response to a nationwide curfew. The Saudi government eased restrictions in June 2020. Worshippers returned but in limited numbers. Social distancing measures remained in place. In 2021 the Ministry of Islamic Affairs designated Al Rajhi Mosque as one of twelve in Riyadh for funeral rituals. This helped manage the pandemic.
Today Al Rajhi Grand Mosque continues to serve as a vital spiritual and community center. It showcases a blend of architectural beauty and religious devotion. It is a significant landmark.
