Feel the ancient stones beneath your feet. This is Masjid al-Nabawi the Prophet’s Mosque.

This hallowed ground holds immense significance. It’s the second mosque built by Prophet Muhammad in Medina. It stands as the second holiest site in Islam. After Masjid al-Haram in Mecca it draws millions of pilgrims each year.

Imagine the scene in 622 AD. Prophet Muhammad himself oversaw its construction. He didn’t accept the land as a gift from two orphaned children. He insisted on paying a fair price. Abu Ayyub al-Ansari generously covered the cost. The mosque was initially a simple open-air structure. It served as a community center a court of law and a religious school.

Over time rulers expanded and embellished Masjid al-Nabawi. They inscribed their names on walls. They added ornate doors and minarets. The mosque’s expansion continued under the Umayyad caliph al-Walid I. It now includes the final resting place of Prophet Muhammad and the first two Rashidun caliphs.

Notice the Green Dome. It marks the location of Prophet Muhammad’s tomb. Originally Aisha’s house it’s a focal point for pilgrims. The Rawdah the area between the minbar and the burial chamber is considered sacred. Many believe it’s a garden of paradise.

In 1909 under Ottoman rule Masjid al-Nabawi became the first place in the Arabian Peninsula with electric lights. For centuries eunuchs guarded the mosque. The last few were photographed by Prince Faisal bin Salman Al Saud.

Today Masjid al-Nabawi is a breathtaking blend of old and new. Expansions continue accommodating millions of worshippers. Modern features like escalators and courtyards seamlessly integrate with the historic structures. Yet the spirit of Prophet Muhammad’s original vision remains. It continues to be a vibrant center of faith and community.

Leave Masjid al-Nabawi with a sense of awe. Carry the peace and tranquility with you. Remember the profound history and the enduring legacy of this sacred place.
