A whisper of history echoes through these ancient stones. Welcome to Al Husseini Mosque in Amman.

Here before us stands a testament to Amman’s enduring spirit. This isn’t just any mosque. It’s the oldest mosque in Amman. Its foundations reach back to the time of Caliph Omar Ben Al Khattab around 640 AD. Imagine the prayers whispered here centuries ago. The original structure was a simple prayer hall and courtyard. A single minaret called the faithful to prayer.

King Abdullah I recognizing the mosque’s importance rebuilt it in 1924. He named it after his father Sharif Hussein. This was Jordan’s first major architectural project. It predates Amman’s bustling markets and even Raghadan Palace. The rebuilt mosque featured a beautiful domed fountain for ablutions. Koranic verses adorned the walls in stunning mosaics.

Over the decades Al Husseini Mosque continued to grow. A second minaret was added in 1952. Renovations took place in 1987 under King Hussein. Sadly a fire engulfed the second floor in 2019. King Abdullah II swiftly ordered its restoration. He ensured its original Islamic architectural designs were preserved. Today the mosque covers 2000 square meters. It accommodates up to 2600 worshippers.

More than a place of worship Al Husseini Mosque is a heart of Amman. For older generations it holds countless memories. It was a place where lives intertwined. A place where rich and poor prayed side by side. Its presence anchors the city’s downtown area. It unites people from all walks of life.

The mosque serves as a living link to Amman’s past. It’s a symbol of the city’s history and the nation’s heritage. As you stand here feel the weight of history. Feel the connection to generations of worshippers who sought solace and community within these walls. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living story. A story that continues to unfold. It’s a story of faith resilience and the enduring power of community.
