Isn’t it remarkable to stand where history whispers? Right here stands Masjid al-Bay’ah. This ancient mosque marks a pivotal moment in Islamic history. Let’s journey back to the 2nd century AH.

Masjid al-Bay’ah is not just stones and bricks. It is a testament to a profound pledge. The people of Yathrib, now Medina, gathered here. They pledged their allegiance to the Prophet Muhammad. This event is known as the First Pledge of Aqabah. Islam began to spread in Medina after this pledge. The mosque became known as “Masjid al-Bay’ah” or the Mosque of the Pledge.

The construction of Masjid al-Bay’ah dates back to 144 AH or 761-2 CE. Mansur Abbasi ordered its construction. He was an Abbasid caliph. Over the centuries, Masjid al-Bay’ah underwent several renovations. Abdulhamid Osmani and King Fahd of Saudi Arabia contributed to its preservation.

Masjid al-Bay’ah sits near Jamarat al-Aqaba. It is outside the legal boundary of Mina. Specifically, it rests on the southern slope of Mount Thubayr. This area is known as Sha’b al-Ansar and Sha’b al-Bay’ah. Today the mosque is located at the end of the exit path of the second level of the Jamarat towards Mecca.

Interestingly, other mosques also carry the name Masjid al-Bay’ah. Masjid al-Ghanam is one. It marks where the people of Mecca pledged allegiance to the Prophet. Another is Masjid al-Jinn. It is where the jinn are said to have pledged allegiance.

Back to our Masjid al-Bay’ah. An inscription from 144 AH remains on its western wall. It commemorates Abu Ja’far al-Mansur Abbasid’s commission. Another inscription from 629 AH or 1231-2 CE notes a restoration. This occurred during the time of al-Mustansir Abbasid.

Ibn Jubayr mentioned Masjid al-Bay’ah in his 578 AH or 1182-3 CE journey. Ibn Taymiyyah also acknowledged the mosque’s existence. Al-Fasi, a historian of Mecca, described it too. He noted its two porticoes. Each had three domes resting on four archways. Behind these porticoes lay an open area.

Throughout history, Masjid al-Bay’ah faced destruction. One report mentions its destruction in the 11th century. During the Ottoman era, Sultan Abdul Hamid II rebuilt it. King Fahd of Saudi Arabia also oversaw repairs.

The area of Masjid al-Bay’ah spans 500 square meters. It has a rectangular shape. It measures 27.90 meters in length and 17 meters in width. The structure consists of stone and brick. Notably, it has no roof.

Consider the significance of this place. Masjid al-Bay’ah symbolizes commitment. It represents the early Muslims’ dedication to their faith. It embodies the spirit of unity and allegiance. It is a place to reflect on the foundations of Islam.

As you stand here, remember the pledge made long ago. Let the story of Masjid al-Bay’ah inspire you. Let it strengthen your own commitment to faith and community.
