This mosque stands as a testament to contemporary Levantine Islamic architecture in Amman.

مسجد الإمام مسلم, also known as King Abdullah I Mosque, is more than just a building. It is a comprehensive Islamic Cultural Center. The mosque commemorates the late King Abdullah I, founder of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Its location in Al-Abdali neighborhood places it at the heart of Amman. This connects the city’s diverse areas. Surrounded by churches, it exemplifies Amman’s diversity.

Construction occurred in two phases between 1982 and 1989. The first phase began after a competition won by Dutch architect Jan Čejka. King Hussein laid the foundation stone. This phase included the mosque’s nave, library, and dome. The Holy Quran House and Royal Compartment were also built. Additionally, the first minaret, imam housing, conference halls, reception salons, and administration rooms were completed. A women’s place of worship, gallery, and parking lots were part of this phase.

The second phase focused on technical aspects. These included preparing the mosque for its opening. Paneling the internal nave with a wooden dome controlled the echo. This also enhanced the space’s spender. Another minaret and dome were constructed. TV lighting was installed for live broadcasts.

The mosque’s design reflects the Quranic verse “Allah is the light of the heavens and earth.” The internal arabesque embodies this verse. The turquoise blue dome represents the planetarium. The red carpet directs worshippers towards Mecca. It represents the fertile land.

The octagonal nave spans 1,615 square meters. It can accommodate 3,000 worshippers. Stone walls stand without pillars inside. The dome soars 31 meters high and stretches 35 meters wide. The Gallery offers space for 6,000 worshippers.

Engraved in Kufi font, the 99 names of Allah adorn the dome’s stone walls. The octagonal marble tiles guide worshippers towards the qiblah.

Before the pandemic, King Abdullah I Mosque welcomed non-Muslim visitors. Religious discussions and Quran memorization competitions occur here. The Islamic Museum houses King Abdullah I’s manuscripts and Islamic artifacts. The Charity Bazaar offers traditional items. It displays Jordanian women’s wear, mosaics, and handicrafts.
