“Neighborhood of the scholars.” Ever heard that phrase? It’s a nickname once given to a quarter in Riyadh, all thanks to a mosque: the Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Mosque.

Today, we stand before the Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Mosque. It’s more than just a place of prayer. It’s a landmark with a story etched in the very stones of Riyadh. The Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Mosque stands as a testament to Riyadh’s rich history. It also reflects its dedication to Islamic scholarship.

Let’s step back in time. The story of Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Mosque begins in 1773. Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Abd al-Wahhab built it. This was soon after Imam Abdulaziz ibn Muhammad took control of the walled town of Riyadh. Back then, it was known as the Dakhna Grand Mosque. It was named to distinguish itself from the Dakhna Small Mosque.

Over time, the Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Mosque evolved. It became a hub for religious and scientific learning. This led to the Dakhna quarter being called “Hayy al-Ulema”. That translates to “neighborhood of the scholars”. Imagine the lively discussions and the pursuit of knowledge echoing through the streets.

Fast forward to the 20th century. The Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Mosque underwent several renovations. These happened in 1942, 1962, and 1983. Each renovation adapted it to the changing needs of the community.

A pivotal moment arrived during the reign of King Abdulaziz ibn Saud. He appointed Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ash-Sheikh as the imam of the Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Mosque. This was after the death of Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Latif Al ash-Sheikh in 1921. Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ash-Sheikh later became the first Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia in 1953. Yet, he continued to serve as the imam of the mosque until he passed away in 1969.

In January 2001, Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz ordered the expansion and rebuilding of the Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Mosque. The Royal Commission for Riyadh City oversaw this major renovation. Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz led the project. The renovated mosque was inaugurated in December 2005.

Today, the Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Mosque stands as a blend of history and modernity. It reflects the evolution of Riyadh itself. The mosque accommodates 1,800 worshippers. It continues to be a significant religious and cultural site in the city. It stands south of Souq al-Zal in the Qasr al-Hukm District.

As you gaze at the Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Mosque, remember its journey. From a simple mosque to a center of learning. From the Dakhna Grand Mosque to the Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Mosque. It is a symbol of Riyadh’s enduring commitment to faith and knowledge. Take a moment to appreciate the architectural details. Reflect on the generations of scholars and worshippers who have passed through its doors. The Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Mosque is not just a building. It is a living testament to the heart and soul of Riyadh.
