“Did Albert Einstein ever walk these grounds?” I ask my audience. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. A name that resonates with history. A place where brilliance bloomed.

The Hebrew University. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to a dream. A dream of a Jewish university in the Land of Israel. A vision first whispered in 1884 at the Kattowitz conference. This vision finally took root on July 24 1918 when the cornerstone was laid.

Imagine the excitement seven years later. April 1 1925. The official opening on Mount Scopus. Leaders of the Jewish world gathered. Distinguished scholars and public figures. Even British dignitaries like the Earl of Balfour were present. It was a momentous occasion. A symbol of hope and resilience.

The early years weren’t easy. There was a debate about the official language. Some wanted German and Arabic for non-Jewish subjects. They feared Modern Hebrew lacked the necessary technical vocabulary. But Hebrew prevailed. Its symbolic weight for Jews worldwide was undeniable. It became the heart and soul of this new institution.

The university grew. It expanded its research and teaching. A medical school was approved in 1949. A faculty of law followed. Then in 1952 the agricultural institute became a full faculty.

The 1948 Arab-Israeli War brought challenges. Mount Scopus was isolated. The Hadassah medical convoy massacre was devastating. 79 Jews perished including doctors and nurses. British soldier Jack Churchill bravely coordinated the evacuation of hundreds.

A new campus was needed. Givat Ram in western Jerusalem became the new home. Classes were held in various buildings across the city. After the Six-Day War in 1967 the university reclaimed Mount Scopus. It was rebuilt.

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem continued its growth. It flourished into a world-class institution. It fostered a culture of innovation. It became a breeding ground for Nobel laureates Fields Medalists and Turing Award winners. It stands as a symbol of intellectual achievement. It’s a living legacy.

Today this campus stands as a beacon of learning. It represents the enduring spirit of the Jewish people. It’s a place where dreams are pursued and knowledge is shared. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. A place you won’t soon forget.
