The Address Downtown a 63-story giant stands tall in Downtown Dubai. It’s more than just a hotel. It’s a symbol of Dubai’s ambition. Its Art Deco style shines. Its location is prime. The Address Downtown offers breathtaking views. It’s close to the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain.
Construction started in 2005. It opened in 2008 costing AED845 million. The Address Downtown quickly became a sought-after destination. It boasts 196 rooms and 626 serviced apartments. It was once the sixth tallest building in Dubai. Sadly. A fire engulfed the Address Downtown on December 31 2015. It started on the 20th floor. The fire spread rapidly. Explosions were heard. Debris fell. Dark smoke filled the air.
Thankfully firefighters responded quickly. They contained the blaze. They evacuated everyone. Fourteen people had minor injuries. One had a moderate injury. One suffered a heart attack during the evacuation. One photographer’s story stood out. Dennis Mallari was trapped on the 48th floor. He used social media and text messages to get help. He eventually tied himself to a window-cleaning platform. He then hung from his balcony until rescued.
The cause of the fire? An electrical short circuit. It was due to a spotlight between the 14th and 15th floors. The fire damaged many apartments. Emaar Properties provided temporary housing. The Address Downtown reopened in 2018 after extensive renovations and the installation of new safety features. The New Year’s Eve fireworks display however was discontinued. The Address Downtown remains a stunning testament to Dubai’s resilience. It stands as a reminder of both triumph and tragedy. It is a landmark that captivates millions.
