Whispers of defiance carried on the desert wind. Here, at Jabal al-Rumat, the air still vibrates with the echoes of a pivotal moment in Islamic history. Jabal al-Rumat, also known as Jabal Aynayn, stands as a silent witness to the Battle of Uhud. Imagine the scene. The year is 625 AD. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, positioned his archers on this very hill, a strategic vantage point overlooking the battlefield between Jabal Uhud and this smaller mount. He gave them explicit orders: Do not abandon your post, regardless of the battle’s outcome. Jabal al-Rumat offered a clear view of the unfolding clash. Initially, the Muslim forces gained the upper hand. The Meccan army began to retreat. But the allure of victory proved too strong for some of the archers. Believing the battle won, they disobeyed their orders and descended from Jabal al-Rumat to collect spoils. This act of disobedience had devastating consequences. Khalid ibn al-Walid, a skilled military strategist who had not yet embraced Islam, seized the opportunity. He led a cavalry charge around the mountain, surprising and overwhelming the remaining archers. The tide of the battle turned. Over seventy companions of the Prophet, including his uncle Hamza ibn Abdul-Muttalib, were martyred. They were laid to rest between Jabal Uhud and Jabal al-Rumat, their graves a place of pilgrimage to this day. Standing here, at Jabal al-Rumat, we can almost hear the clash of swords and the cries of battle. This hill, once a strategic position, became a symbol of the importance of discipline and obedience. The Battle of Uhud, though a setback for the early Muslims, served as a profound lesson. The Quran later addressed this event, emphasizing the need for forgiveness and consultation, even in the face of disappointment. Jabal al-Rumat stands not only as a testament to a critical battle but also to the human capacity for both error and redemption. Its diminished size, due to the accumulation of silt from Wadi Qana, serves as a reminder of the passage of time and the enduring power of faith.
