The majestic Al Rajhi Grand Mosque stands before you. Its Moorish Revival architecture is breathtaking.

This magnificent mosque is more than just a place of worship. It’s a cornerstone of Riyadh’s cultural landscape. Funded by the generous Sulaiman bin Abdulaziz Al-Rajhi it opened in 2004. It replaced an older mosque of the same name. This older mosque had served the al-Safa neighborhood since 1985.

The Al Rajhi Grand Mosque is one of the largest in Riyadh. It’s even considered among the largest in Saudi Arabia and the Arab world. Its immense size is awe-inspiring. The mosque can accommodate 20000 worshippers. The interior covers 13260 square meters. The impressive dome rises 37 meters high. Two minarets reach 55 meters into the sky.

The mosque provides essential Islamic services. These include ritual baths and prayers for the deceased. This was previously offered in the al-Rabwah neighborhood. The mosque’s library is a treasure trove of knowledge. It holds around 16000 books and 47000 volumes.

The Al Rajhi Grand Mosque has witnessed significant events. It hosted the funeral prayers of prominent figures. These included Saleh bin Abdulaziz al-Rajhi. He was the founder of Al Rajhi Bank. Mohamed bin Abdulaziz al-Rajhi’s funeral also took place here. He was the brother of Saleh and Sulaiman.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought challenges. The mosque closed temporarily in 2020. This was due to a nationwide curfew. It reopened in June 2020. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs designated the Al Rajhi Mosque for funerary rituals. This helped control the spread of the virus.

Even in popular culture the Al Rajhi Grand Mosque has made an appearance. It was briefly featured in the 2023 Indian film Dunki. However the film incorrectly placed it in Jeddah’s skyline.

The Al Rajhi Grand Mosque isn’t just a building. It is a vibrant hub of faith community and history. Its presence enriches Riyadh’s cultural fabric. Its story continues to unfold. It stands as a testament to generosity and faith. It is a place that connects the past present and future of Riyadh.
