Situated on Al Inshirah Street in Madinat Sultan Qaboos, the Jama’a Al Bait mosque is a modern classic. The mosque gets its name from the Arabic word “Al Bait” which means “the house.” This name refers to the mosque as a house of worship for the community. You can’t miss its slender green-tiled pillars standing in front of the mosque. But the real show-stopper is its distinctive dark wooden door, embellished with delicate carvings and silver finishes. Inside, you will find a gigantic sculpture of the Holy Quran hanging from the wall of the prayer hall. What’s special about this mosque, in comparison to others, is that it has a Ladies’ Prayer Hall. I know what you must be thinking: Many mosques have separate prayer halls for women, but this is a bit different. Here, the Ladies’ Prayer Hall is not simply a separate space but a beautifully designed space with attention to detail that shows respect and dignity for the women. This mosque, though a relatively recent construction, gives a glimpse into a contemporary take on traditional Omani architecture and its cultural and religious significance.
