Established in 1957 King Saud University stands as a beacon of knowledge in Riyadh. It wasn’t always known by this name. Initially founded as Riyadh University it later reverted to its original name in 1982. This reflects the profound connection between the university and its namesake King Saud bin Abdulaziz. He envisioned a university to address Saudi Arabia’s skilled worker shortage. His vision birthed the first university in Saudi Arabia.
King Saud University wasn’t just bricks and mortar. It was a response to the nation’s needs. King Abdulaziz laid the groundwork for modernization. His son King Saud implemented crucial changes including the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Education. Prince Fahd the first Minister of Education championed higher education. His dedication led to the creation of King Saud University. Royal Decree No 17 formalized the university’s establishment. Its mission was to disseminate knowledge promote scientific and literary study and contribute to global advancements while reviving Islamic civilization.
The university’s growth mirrored Saudi Arabia’s own progress. New colleges sprung up. The College of Science the College of Business and the College of Pharmacy were established between 1958 and 1960. Women were first admitted in 1961 to the College of Arts and the College of Public Administration. The expansion continued with colleges of Agriculture Engineering and Education joining the fold. A College of Medicine opened in 1969 and in 1974 the Arabic Language Institute was founded for non-Arabic speakers.
King Saud University wasn’t merely an academic institution. It became a vibrant hub of activity. A dedicated hospital King Khalid University Hospital opened in 1982. This 850 bed facility provided comprehensive medical services to Saudis. The Palm Mosque Jamaa Al-Naqheel another architectural marvel opened its doors that same year. Designed by Dr Basil Al Bayati it incorporated the palm trunk motif from the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. The mosque’s interior calligraphy by Ghani Alani a master calligrapher is a testament to artistry. Al Bayati also designed the university’s entrance gates a symbolic representation of faith and knowledge two pillars of Islam.
Today King Saud University boasts a sprawling campus. It was designed by HOK Architects and constructed by Blount International in the 1980s. The King Salman Central Library is a remarkable structure. This seven story building houses a vast collection of books periodicals and multimedia resources. The university is now an independent non-profit academic institution. It’s more than a university. It’s a legacy. It’s a testament to a vision and a nation’s journey. It’s King Saud University.
