“Did you know that this tower was built in reverse?” I ask. We are standing before the Riyadh Water Tower. Locally it is known as Burj al-Khazzaan. It is a landmark in the al-Futah neighborhood.

Let’s explore the story of the Riyadh Water Tower. This tower is not just a water tank. It is a symbol of Riyadh’s growth. It reflects the city’s ambition.

Back in the 1960s Riyadh was expanding rapidly. The city needed a modern water supply. King Faisal tasked the agriculture ministry with finding a solution. In 1969 the ministry hired Swedish architect Sune Lindström. He worked for Vattenbyggnadsbyrån VBB. Lindström was to design a modern water system for Riyadh. He was also working on the Kuwait Water Towers.

The location for the Riyadh Water Tower was chosen carefully. It was built near the Murabba Palace. This location served neighborhoods like al-Malazz. Manfuhah and Shumaisi also benefited.

The Riyadh Water Tower has two tanks. The first holds 12000 cubic meters. The highest water level reaches 51 meters. The second tank holds 350 cubic meters. It is for emergencies.

Interestingly the Riyadh Water Tower’s construction was unique. Usually towers are built from the ground up. But the Riyadh Water Tower was built in reverse. First the upper section was built. This section has two water chambers. Then it was raised onto the tower’s base.

King Faisal initiated the tower’s construction in 1970. It was part of the first development plan. This plan addressed the water needs of Riyadh’s residents. It ensured water access for growing neighborhoods.

Thirty-two cranes hoisted the tank. The lower column is cylindrical. It has gray and white stripes.

The Riyadh Water Tower is 61 meters tall. It was the tallest structure in Saudi Arabia from 1971 to 1981. The tower also had a rooftop restaurant with city views. The restaurant was later redesigned. It now features a cafe and balcony.

The road next to the tower is called al-Khazan Street. In 2005 al-Watan Park was established around the tower. It is known as Water Tower Park.
