“O Abu Mundhir what verse of God’s Book is greatest?” The question hung in the air a whisper from the past. We stand before a place once vibrant with faith. This is where Ubayy ibn Ka’b lived and prayed. A companion of the Prophet Muhammad he held a position of immense esteem.

Ubayy ibn Ka’b a man of Medina born into the Banu Khazraj tribe was among the first to embrace Islam. He pledged his allegiance to Muhammad before the migration to Medina. His unwavering devotion led him to participate in the Battle of Badr and other significant conflicts. But Ubayy’s contributions went beyond battlefield bravery.

He was a skilled scribe for the Prophet writing letters and recording revelations. Ubayy was among the few who compiled the Quran’s surahs creating his own codex. His version contained 116 surahs differing slightly from the later Uthmanic codex with 114. The difference is fascinating. It demonstrates the organic evolution of the text before its final compilation.

Ubayy’s knowledge of the Quran was profound. The Prophet himself praised his understanding of the Throne Verse. He declared it the greatest verse in the Quran. This wasn’t just any statement. The Prophet’s approval was a mark of significant accomplishment. After the Prophet’s death Ubayy remained a pillar of the community. He was one of the twenty-five Hafiz those who knew the entire Quran by heart.

Ubayy’s wisdom extended beyond the Quran. He was part of the consultative group Abu Bakr and later Umar consulted on important matters. This council included other prominent figures such as Umar Uthman Ali and Zayd ibn Thabit. Their collective wisdom shaped the early Muslim community.

Ubayy’s life was dedicated to faith learning and service. His legacy continues to inspire. He was known for his unwavering devotion to the Quran his deep understanding of Islamic law and his commitment to justice. His simple life served as a reminder of the importance of piety and devotion.

Umar ibn al-Khattab once called Ubayy the “sayyid of the Muslims”. This title speaks to the immense respect and admiration Ubayy commanded. He died in 649 AD during the caliphate of Uthman. His death marked the end of a life devoted to faith and scholarship. His contribution to the early Muslim community has secured his place in history. We remember him here at this site. A testament to the man who lived and prayed in this sacred space. A reminder of his enduring contributions to Islam.
