Across the Kidron Valley, the secrets of the Temple Mount whisper to us from Mitzpeh HaMasu’ot. This viewpoint, perched on the Mount of Olives, offers a unique perspective, a window into history. Mitzpeh HaMasu’ot is more than just a scenic overlook. It’s the new home of the Temple Mount Sifting Project.

The Temple Mount Sifting Project. A bold endeavor born from a controversial act. In 1999, unlicensed renovations on the Temple Mount led to the dumping of tons of earth, mixed with priceless artifacts. Archaeologists Barkay and Dvira saw an opportunity amidst the destruction. They retrieved the discarded earth, bringing it here, to Mitzpeh HaMasu’ot.

Here, thousands of volunteers have meticulously sifted through the debris. They have unearthed a treasure trove of history. Coins, weapons, architectural fragments, and even a possible Hasmonean seal, all whispering stories of the past. Each piece painstakingly cleaned and categorized. Each a tiny fragment of a much larger puzzle, helping us to understand the complex history of the Temple Mount.

Imagine holding a coin from the Great Revolt against the Romans. Picture the vibrant colors of floor tiles that once graced the Temple Mount courtyards. Can you envision the skilled hands that crafted these artifacts centuries ago? The Temple Mount itself remains untouched by archaeological excavation. The Sifting Project offers the closest glimpse we can get, piecing together history from the remnants. Mitzpeh HaMasu’ot, the Masuot Lookout, is a testament to the dedication of these archaeologists and volunteers. Their work has shed light on a vital part of Jerusalem’s history, and it continues here. Their dedication continues to unveil the mysteries buried within the earth, breathing life into the stories of the Temple Mount. Come, join the sifting, and become a part of this incredible journey through time.
