Across the sprawling campus, a beacon of faith and knowledge stands tall. Yeshiva Ohr V’Yeshua in Haifa. This isn’t just any educational institution. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven from threads of history, religion, and academic pursuit. Yeshiva Ohr V’Yeshua is a modern Orthodox Jewish yeshiva. It’s the largest yeshiva in Israel. The yeshiva was founded in 1946 by Rabbi Eliezer Auerbach and Rabbi Yehuda Shapira. It was originally located in Bnei Brak. The institution moved to Haifa in 1970. Yeshiva Ohr V’Yeshua expanded under Dr. Avraham Bir. He oversaw the establishment of new educational programs and expanded the school facilities. This laid the foundation for its growth and prominence within the Jewish educational landscape. In the year 2000, the yeshiva was officially named Yeshiva Ohr V’Yeshua. This honored Rabbi Auerbach’s vision of combining Torah study with secular education. Today, at Yeshiva Ohr V’Yeshua, roughly 900 students dedicate themselves to studying Jewish texts and engaging with the complexities of modern life. The original vision of Rabbi Auerbach continues to shape the experience of the students. It emphasizes the importance of Torah study as the bedrock of a meaningful life. It also recognizes the importance of secular studies in preparing students to be active members of Israeli society. Students at Yeshiva Ohr V’Yeshua pursue a wide range of studies. These include Talmud, Jewish law, philosophy, mathematics, and computer science. The campus itself is a microcosm of this blend of tradition and modernity. Ancient texts fill the library shelves.
