Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? Welcome to the Sultan’s Pool a breathtaking ancient water basin in the Valley of Hinnom. Right here in front of you lies a testament to Jerusalem’s rich and complex past. This impressive structure wasn’t always known as the Sultan’s Pool. Its history stretches back far beyond Suleiman the Magnificent’s reign in the 16th century.

The Sultan’s Pool’s story begins much earlier. It started as part of a sophisticated water network serving Jerusalem during the Second Temple period. A dam was built across the Valley of Hinnom. This created a reservoir. Before the dam an ancient bridge stood. The lower aqueduct carrying water from Solomon’s Pools near Bethlehem passed over it. It delivered precious water to Jerusalem and the Temple Mount.

Archaeological discoveries here are truly fascinating. The Israel Antiquities Authority uncovered four distinct phases of aqueduct construction at the same spot. The earliest phase dates back to the Hasmonean period. The most recent is from the Ottoman era. A rock-hewn canal from the Roman period was also found. Some believe it’s the Snake Pool mentioned by Josephus.

During the Crusader era the pool was known as Lacus Germani. Then came Suleiman the Magnificent. He significantly expanded the Sultan’s Pool. He transformed it into a vast reservoir. It measured 67 meters by 169 meters and 12 meters deep. He also added a sebil a public water fountain. It remains a testament to his architectural prowess. Today the Hebron Road runs over the dam he built.

The Sultan’s Pool isn’t just a historical site. It’s a vibrant event venue. In the summer it may be dry. It then transforms into a stage. Many international artists have performed here including Dire Straits Eurythmics Leonard Cohen and many others. Their music echoes through this ancient space bringing together the past and the present.

As you stand before the Sultan’s Pool imagine the centuries unfolding. Imagine the water flowing the sounds of the city the echoes of history. This isn’t just a pool. It’s a living museum a stage a vibrant hub in the heart of Jerusalem. It is a true marvel. A reminder that Jerusalem’s story is written in stone and water. A story that continues to unfold.
