Born in Ukraine in 1922, Knorozov’s path to Mayan hieroglyphs was unconventional. He served in the Soviet armed forces during World War II. Later, he graduated from Moscow State University.
In 1952, Knorozov published an article that revolutionized the field. He proposed that Mayan glyphs represented either logograms or phonetic signs. Logograms represent entire words. Phonetic signs represent consonant-vowel combinations. He correctly posited that a Mayan word with a consonant-vowel-consonant structure used two glyphs. The vowel of the second glyph remained unpronounced.
Using this approach, Knorozov deciphered many incomprehensible Mayan symbols. His major work, “The Writing of the Maya Indians,” was published in 1963. By the 1970s, his phonetic hypothesis gained widespread acceptance. This allowed scholars to read ancient Mayan inscriptions in their entirety.
