A behemoth of steel and fire. That’s how they described Zaamurets. This armored train a legend of the rails. It’s a story of revolution chaos and war spanning continents.

Today we stand before a monument to this incredible machine. A testament to its impact on history. Zaamurets began its life in the Odessa rail yards in 1916. Built for the Tsarist army it was a marvel of engineering. Two fully traversable 57-millimeter Nordenfelt gun turrets. Eight machine guns for close-in protection. Three to four inches of armor shielded the crew. Two Italian Fiat 60 horsepower petrol motors propelled it at 28 miles per hour.

Its story is intertwined with the Russian Revolution. The collapse of the Tsarist regime left Ukraine in chaos. Zaamurets changed hands multiple times. It fought for Bolsheviks Whites anarchists and even the Czechoslovak Legion. The legionnaires a group of Czech and Slovak soldiers fighting for independence. They even used Zaamurets in their desperate 6000-mile journey to Vladivostok.

Can you imagine the sights and sounds aboard Zaamurets? The roar of the engines the rattle of the tracks. The deafening blasts of artillery. The fear in the eyes of its enemies.

The train’s journey took it through Ukraine Russia and China. It was renamed several times Orlik BP-4 Lenin and Train No 105. Each name a reflection of its changing owners and the turbulent times it witnessed.

Eventually Zaamurets fell into Japanese hands in Manchuria. Its final fate remains a mystery. Was it destroyed? Scrapped? We may never know.

But its legacy lives on. Zaamurets is more than just an armored train. It’s a symbol of a bygone era. An era of revolution war and incredible human resilience. It’s a story worth remembering. A story worth sharing. A story that continues to fascinate us today. A story woven into the very fabric of Saint Petersburg’s history.
