“Halt! Who goes there?” you might have heard in 1812. This was when local villagers bravely stood against Napoleon’s advancing troops near here. Today we stand before the Chapel of Sergius of Radonezh in Tarasovka. It is a monument to that courage.
This Orthodox chapel stands in the village of Tarasovka. Tarasovka is in the Pushkin district of the Moscow region. It serves as a poignant reminder of the events of 1812. The Chapel of Sergius of Radonezh was built between 1911 and 1912. It commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Отечественной войны. That’s the Patriotic War.
Grigory Vladimirovich Sapozhnikov financed the construction. He owned a local silk weaving factory. The chapel’s design is attributed to architect S.M. Erofeev. Consecrated in 2012, the Chapel of Sergius of Radonezh honors the events of 1812. During that time, villagers and Cossacks bravely halted the French army’s advance. They were marching toward the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.
Imagine Tarasovka in 1812. Locals joined Cossacks. Together, they stood against Napoleon’s Grande Armée. Their brave stand delayed the French advance. It was towards the vital Trinity-Sergius Lavra. The chapel stands as a symbol of their courage. It also recognizes their sacrifice.
In 1920, the chapel was shut down. It fell into disrepair. By the 1930s, it was almost ruined. The stone slabs of its floor were repurposed. They became part of a collective farm garage.
However, the spirit of Tarasovka endured. In September 2008, a foundation stone was laid. It commemorated the upcoming 450th anniversary of Tarasovka. It also honored the heroes of 1812. Restoration began in May 2012 using old plans.
The restored Chapel of Sergius of Radonezh was reconsecrated. The ceremony took place on September 9, 2012. It coincided with the 200th anniversary of the Отечественной войны.
