“Concrete instead of bricks? How daring!” That’s what they must have said during the construction of the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God. This church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. It is located on Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment.

Let’s delve into the story of this remarkable building. The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God began its journey in 1894. Monks from the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra sought to expand their monastic presence. They chose Saint Petersburg as the site.

Construction commenced in 1895. Vasily Kosyakov designed the church in the neo-Byzantine style. His vision was ambitious. The builders opted for concrete to hasten the construction of the main arches. This was a bold move for its time.

A temporary church was erected inside in September 1896. Services were held continuously within the evolving structure. On September 14, 1897, crosses were raised to crown the domes. The main chapel honoring the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was consecrated on December 18, 1897.

The domes gleamed in the summer of 1898. They were covered in gold. By 1903, the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God was finally completed.

However, the church’s journey was far from over. In 1922, a theft shook the sacred space. A chalice, cross, and altar gospel vanished from the altar. Church employees faced accusations of negligence.

The shadows of the Soviet era loomed. Four priests who served at the church were arrested. The Leningrad Regional Executive Committee decided to close the temple on August 25. Services continued until January 23, 1935.

The Leningrad military port took control after closure. In 1936, the church became a sports hall. A chilling transformation occurred in 1956. The Lengiproinzhproekt Institute planned an indoor ice rink inside the church. This led to the destruction of several paintings. Portraits of Lenin adorned the new ice rink that opened in 1961.

Despite its turbulent past, the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God remains. It stands as a reminder of architectural ambition. It also serves as a symbol of enduring faith amidst changing times. As you gaze upon its facade, remember its story. It is a story etched in concrete, gold, and the resilience of the human spirit.
