Whispers of devotion echo within the walls of the Chasovnya Ikony Bozhiey Materi “Zhivonosny Istochnik” v Tsaritsyne. This chapel, nestled within the Tsaritsyno estate, holds a story as vibrant as the spring it’s named after. The Chasovnya Ikony Bozhiey Materi “Zhivonosny Istochnik” v Tsaritsyne stands as a testament to faith and resilience. It was originally built in 1722 by Prince Dmitry Kantemir, a ruler of Moldavia who was gifted the Tsaritsyno estate by Peter I. The architectural style, initially Petrovsky baroque, later transformed into Elizabethan baroque during a reconstruction by Kantemir’s son, Matvey, between 1759 and 1765. The chapel’s journey through time has been marked by both devotion and hardship. The Chasovnya Ikony Bozhiey Materi “Zhivonosny Istochnik” v Tsaritsyne served as a place of worship for many years. However, in the late 1930s, the church faced closure, ostensibly due to unpaid debts. Its sacred purpose was replaced by mundane functions, serving first as a transformer booth, then as a printing house, and finally, from 1975 to 1990, as a carpentry workshop. The heavy machinery used during this period caused significant damage to the chapel’s interior murals and structural integrity. Yet, even in its altered state, the Chasovnya Ikony Bozhiey Materi “Zhivonosny Istochnik” v Tsaritsyne retained a quiet dignity. In 1990, a decision was made to return the chapel to the Russian Orthodox Church. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in its history. The first services were resumed in early 1991, breathing life back into the chapel’s walls. Restoration efforts continued, finally culminating in the complete restoration of the Chasovnya Ikony Bozhiey Materi “Zhivonosny Istochnik” v Tsaritsyne in 1998. Today, the chapel stands as a beacon of faith, a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit, and a reminder of the life-giving spring of hope that flows through even the darkest of times.
