A colossal bronze horse rears up before you. Its rider Peter the Great surveys his city. This is the Bronze Horseman a symbol of St Petersburg’s enduring spirit.

The statue stands proudly on Senate Square. It’s more than just a monument. It’s a testament to Peter the Great’s vision and Catherine the Great’s tribute. Catherine commissioned the statue. She wanted to honor her predecessor. The inscription reads Petro Primo Catharina Secunda. This means To Peter the First from Catherine the Second.

The sculptor Etienne Maurice Falconet was a Frenchman. He depicted Peter as a Roman hero. Peter gallantly leads Russia forward. His horse crushes a serpent representing his enemies. A young woman Marie-Anne Collot sculpted Peter’s head. She used a death mask and portraits. She may have even subtly shaped his eyes into hearts a charming legend suggests.

The statue’s pedestal is a massive red granite boulder. It’s called the Thunder Stone. Finding and transporting it was an incredible engineering feat. It took 400 men nine months to move this 1500-tonne rock. They used a metal sledge and bronze spheres.

A legend says St Petersburg will remain unconquered as long as the Bronze Horseman stands. During World War II it survived the Siege of Leningrad. Sandbags and a wooden shelter protected it. The statue remained a symbol of hope and resilience.
