Its construction was a labor of love, overseen by the revered patriarch Alexy II of Moscow. You’ll notice the distinctive wooden domes, a tribute to ancient Russian architecture. But this church honors a saint from 9th century Edessa, not Russia. Theodore of Edessa was a scholar, a monk, and ultimately a bishop. Legend tells us he even converted a Muslim caliph to Christianity through a miracle! He used earth from the Holy Sepulchre to heal the caliph’s illness. Although the caliph was later martyred for his newfound faith, Theodore’s act speaks volumes about his character. He was a man of peace and faith, a bridge between cultures.
