“A heart prayed a heart prayed for by the heart,” so goes a line from a poem dedicated to the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God. Imagine the faith that built this place.
Hello everyone. Today we are standing before the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God. It is located in the village of Rybatskoye. This area was once a bustling fishing hub.
The Church of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God has a unique history. The first residents of Rybatskoye Sloboda wanted their own church. They wanted to quickly build a place to worship.
Some say that the church came with the fishermen themselves. They were moved from the Oka River to the Neva at Peter I’s decree. They brought their faith. They may have even brought a church. They took it apart log by log. Then they rebuilt it. Whether it floated here or not, it was built and rebuilt.
This shows the deep religious faith of Russia. Especially its Christian people. The first church was wooden. We don’t know what it looked like. But the governor noted some icons in 1748.
These included Saint Emelyan. Also the Prophets Elijah and Elisey. Plus images of the Mother of God. There were also images of the Savior. And of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker.
By 1742, the church had a priest named Vasily Alekseev. Later a deacon named Semyon joined him. They got paid little. This was common in Russia then. Churches relied on donations.
The wooden Church of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God needed replacement. Stone was the answer. Construction began in 1765. Empress Catherine II approved the project. It cost over ten thousand rubles. But funds ran short. Construction often stopped. Still, the new two-story stone Church of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God opened in 1773.
By 1784, the old wooden church was taken down. A stone monument marked the spot. It said a church stood here. It served the first settlers.
The Church of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God changed over time. In the 1840s it got a makeover. Artist Kuznetsov painted new icons. The church also gained a rich iconostasis. By the late 1800s a wooden chapel was added.
In 1900, a major rebuild began. Architect Dmitry Pavlovich Ryabov designed it. He worked in a Russian style.
Today, the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God stands as a symbol of faith. It reminds us of the people who built it. They faced challenges but never lost hope. Their church is now a landmark. It is a testament to their devotion.
