Tucked away in the northwest corner of Moscow, the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo stands as a testament to enduring faith. It has witnessed centuries of change. The Church of the Intercession has seen Moscow transform from a medieval city to a sprawling metropolis. Right here, in Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo, we find a microcosm of Russian history. The very name, Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo, tells a story. It reflects the dual lineage of the area’s landowners. The original wooden church dedicated to the Intercession of the Holy Virgin was likely built around 1622. It was commissioned by Mikhail Danilov, one of the “pereselchiki,” or resettled boyars, loyal to Tsar Mikhail Feodorovich Romanov. This first church gave the village its initial name, Pokrovskoye. In 1750, Peter Ivanovich Streshnev, a descendant of the Romanovs through marriage, undertook renovations. The church was rebuilt with a baroque-style refectory. It also received a prominent bell tower. This architectural addition gave the church a new aesthetic. It also marked a shift in the local landscape. More importantly, the area became known as Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo. This name has persisted to this day. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the Church of the Intercession underwent further changes. It became a focal point for the community. Yet, it retained its essential charm. In 1812, it survived the French occupation and the devastating fire that ravaged Moscow. By the late 19th century, the surrounding parish decided it was time for a larger, more imposing structure. In 1896, a new church, designed by architect G.A. Kayser, was built. It was consecrated. This new church boasted two new chapels. It also provided ample space for the growing congregation. Unfortunately, the 20th century brought hardship to the Church of the Intercession. In 1931, it was closed by the Soviet authorities. Many of its artifacts were lost or destroyed. The church building itself narrowly escaped demolition. However, its spiritual life came to a halt. Decades later, after the fall of the Soviet Union, efforts began to restore the church. In 1992, the building was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. Restoration work began almost immediately. The Church of the Intercession was finally reconsecrated in 1993. It was a joyous occasion. It marked the revival of a community’s spiritual heart. Today, as you stand before the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo, take a moment to appreciate its journey through time. It has survived turmoil. It has witnessed renewal. It stands as a beacon of hope for generations to come.
