Lost in time it was once a wooden church first mentioned in documents in 1625. We are standing before the Church of the Iversk Icon of the Mother of God. This church is a significant landmark in Moscow. Its history spans centuries. The first church on this site was dedicated to St. George.

The current building dates back to 1791-1802. It was built with funds from a merchant named Savin. The Church of the Iversk Icon of the Mother of God has undergone several renovations. These renovations occurred throughout the 19th century. They preserved its architectural integrity.

The church’s design is attributed to Ivan Yegotov. The attribution is considered likely due to the building’s classical forms. The overall style is typical of Moscow classicism from the late 18th century. The Church of the Iversk Icon of the Mother of God features a cylindrical shape. It is topped with a single dome. This design is characteristic of Moscow classicism.

Inside the Church of the Iversk Icon of the Mother of God, a wide trapezoid incorporates three internal volumes. These include a square central area. There are also two oval-shaped side-chapels. The bell tower stands above the entrance. It enhances the central volume.

In 1930, the Church of the Iversk Icon of the Mother of God was closed by the Soviet authorities. It housed a club and a gallery of modern art. The original columns were lost.

The Russian Orthodox Church restored the Church of the Iversk Icon of the Mother of God. It was returned on July 12, 1994. The interior was renovated. The lost columns were accurately reconstructed.

The main altar is consecrated in honor of the Iversk Icon. Side chapels are dedicated to St. George and St. John the Warrior.

The Church of the Iversk Icon of the Mother of God stands as a monument. It reflects the architectural styles of the late 18th century. This church is located on Bolshaya Ordynka Street. Nearby stands the Kireevski-Karpov house built between 1817 and 1821.
