The Church of Beheading of St. John the Baptist at Dyakovo – what a curious place! It stands on the cusp of the Golosov Ravine, a high terrace overlooking the Moskva River floodplain. Legend has it, this is where Grand Duke Vasily III of Moscow learned about the conception of his son, the future Tsar Ivan IV, also known as Ivan the Terrible. So, this church, with its unique design, is steeped in history and regal tales, bearing witness to the birth of one of Russia’s most enigmatic rulers.

The Church of Beheading of St. John the Baptist at Dyakovo dates back to the 16th century, a time when Moscow was the heart of a vast and expanding empire. The church boasts an array of five pillar-shaped volumes, each with a distinct entrance and an altar. The central ‘pillar,’ dedicated to the beheading of St. John the Baptist, is twice as tall as the others and stands at the east end of the church. These four ‘pillars,’ which are essentially side chapels, are connected to one another by galleries, with one side of each adjacent to the central tower.

The Church of Beheading of St. John the Baptist at Dyakovo is a testament to the unique style of Russion architecture. The ‘pillar’ tiers are adorned with decorative sunk panels. Semicircular and triangular corbel arches, known as ‘kokoshniks’ in Russian architecture, rise upward, almost like the traditional married women’s headdresses, creating a majestic, multi-tiered structure that seems to reach towards the heavens! The church’s design blends perfectly with the natural landscape of Dyakovo, the graceful curves of the ‘kokoshniks’ mirroring the sweeping slopes of the ravine.

In the 1920s, the church was closed by the Soviet government and was handed over to the Museum Department of the Chief Bureau for Science and Culture. The church remained abandoned for many years before finally being re-consecrated and opened for services in 1992. Today, the Church of Beheading of St. John the Baptist at Dyakovo is a place of peace and worship, attracting both locals and visitors eager to witness its unique architectural features and fascinating history. The stories whispered within the church’s walls speak volumes about the turbulent moments that shaped Russia, from the reign of Ivan the Terrible to the tumultuous years of Soviet rule and beyond.
