“Is this where the students pray?” a tourist whispers, gazing up at the golden dome. We are standing before the Church of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist. This is a place of both worship and learning. It is deeply connected to the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy.

The Church of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist has a rich history. It is intertwined with the development of theological education in St. Petersburg. The church’s story begins in the early 19th century. Emperor Nicholas I decided to build a new home for the seminary in 1838.

Apollon Fedoseevich Shchedrin designed the building in the style of classicism. This included a home church. Construction finished in 1841. On September 26, 1841, Philaret, the Metropolitan of Kyiv and Galitsky, consecrated the church.

In 1859, a special staff was established for the seminary church. This meant that monastic priests from the Lavra would serve there. The Church of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist became a center for the spiritual life of students and faculty.

After the revolution, the church shared the fate of many religious institutions. In 1918, it was closed along with the Theological Seminary. The interior was lost.

However, the spirit of faith endured. In 1946, with the revival of theological schools, the church was re-consecrated. It was again on its original site. The interior was pieced together from various churches.

Major reconstruction occurred after the celebration of the seminary’s 75th anniversary in 1884. From 1886 to 1887, architect Nikolay Nikiforovich Markov added a three-story addition. In 1888, the church was re-consecrated by Leonty, the Bishop of Warsaw.

The Church of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist has undergone significant restoration. In 2005, the paintings, stucco, and stained glass were all completely restored. Patriarch Alexy II re-consecrated the church in 2006.

In 2009, artistic restoration of the church began. The project aimed to restore the historical style. By May 2010, the painting of the main dome was complete. Bishop Ambrose consecrated the new paintings in August 2010.

Today, the Church of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist continues its mission. It serves as a spiritual anchor for the academy. It has beautiful decorations including the icons of the Savior and the Mother of God. Its history reflects the resilience of faith and the enduring importance of theological education in St. Petersburg.
