The Church of St. Irene, a small, pink-hued building with a grey metal hipped roof, stands at the heart of Pokrovskoye. It is dedicated to the Great Martyr Irene, a symbol of strength and perseverance in the face of adversity. The church has a long and fascinating history, reaching back to the 17th century when Tsar Michael, during his reign from 1613 to 1645, ordered its construction. This act of piety, however, was not a random gesture, but a heartfelt tribute to the birth of his daughter Irina. In fact, the church was originally named after her, a testament to the Tsar’s paternal love and devotion.

The building was destroyed in the 18th century, and a simpler church was erected in its place between 1790 and 1800. Sadly, during the turbulent years of the Soviet era, the church was left to fall into disrepair. In 1992, the church was lovingly restored and reopened by the Orthodox Church, bringing light back to the forgotten temple. The church stands as a symbol of resilience and religious devotion, its story a reminder of the enduring faith of the Russian people.
