It also holds the distinction of being the first Buddhist temple in Europe. Construction on this unique sanctuary began in 1909. It reflects a blend of Tibetan architectural canons.

But where did the idea for a Buddhist temple in St. Petersburg come from? In 1908 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received a request. The Tibetan Dalai Lama wanted to build a Datsan in St. Petersburg. Scientists supported this proposal. Construction commenced in 1909. Buryat lama Aghvan Dorzhiev acquired the land. Dorzhiev and the XIII Dalai Lama funded the construction through donations. These donations came from Buryatia and Kalmykia.

The Храм Дацан Гунзэчойнэй was meticulously built. It followed the strict rules of Tibetan architecture. A committee of oriental scientists managed construction. Buddhist monk O. B. Budayev was invited for the interior decorations. He painted the central church using sketches by Nicholas Roerich.

Notice the temple walls. They are clad in red and purple granite. The red brick entablature features blue belts with white circles. A three-story building connects with a four-story tower. The tower is topped with a gilded copper structure known as “ganchir”. The temple is decorated with an eight-degree circle. This circle features copper gazelle figures. Gilded cones adorn the main facade’s corners. These cones house printed prayer texts.
