Did you know that the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God was once converted into a garage? The story of this church is truly unique.

Let’s delve into the history of the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience in Saint Petersburg.

In spring 1903, a plan emerged to build a stone church. It would be a five-domed Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. It was dedicated to the coronation of the Sovereign. The church’s design was based on the 17th-century Moscow style. N. N. Nikonov, a renowned architect from Saint Petersburg, developed the plan. His son N. N. Nikonov managed the construction.

Construction began on October 2 1905. Bishop Veniamin of Kaluga and Borovsk led the groundbreaking ceremony. However progress was slow due to limited funds. Prince Obolensky and Kolokutikova contributed much of the money. Only by 1910 was the main structure complete.

In 1911 they raised the belfry. The cupolas were installed on the church. The main altar was consecrated in 1913. It featured a three-tiered iconostasis. Later the altar of St. Olga was also consecrated.

After the revolution the church faced hardship. In 1934 the Tikhvin Church was closed. It was repurposed as a garage for the Vyborg district.

By 1982, the church was in ruins. Residential buildings later appeared in its place.

The church was returned to the religious community in the early 1990s. Regular services resumed on July 19 1993. In spring 1999 Metropolitan Vladimir of Saint Petersburg consecrated the main chapel.

In 2001, the southern chapel was also consecrated. It was the first chapel in Saint Petersburg dedicated to the Royal Passion Bearers. The northern chapel was consecrated in 2005. It was dedicated to St. Alexander Nevsky.

Today the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God stands proudly. It is a symbol of faith reborn from the ashes of Soviet times. Its walls have witnessed both destruction and renewal. The church serves as a reminder of the enduring power of faith.
