Have you ever noticed a church nestled among the bustling streets of Moscow? Not a grand cathedral with towering spires, but one with a more modest presence, yet bearing a rich history. It is the Church of St. John the Theologian under the Elm, or, as we like to affectionately call it, the Ioanno-Bogoslovsky Church under the Elm. This church stands on Novy Arbat, a place that has seen its share of change and transformation, just like the church itself.

Built in 1825, the church replaced an older structure that was destroyed in a fire. The original church was built as a small wooden chapel in the late 17th century, to serve the local community. Over the years, it has been rebuilt several times, the last time being in the late 19th century. There’s a reason why you see so much plaster on the exterior – the church endured various modifications and repairs over the years, even a fire in 1854, but it stands strong.

You might expect this church to be steeped in the glorious history of churches in Moscow, with ancient roots tracing back centuries. However, the Ioanno-Bogoslovsky Church is more about resilience and adaptation, bearing witness to change and upheaval. It’s a church that has constantly reemerged from the ashes, much like the phoenix. The church suffered an attempt of closure in 1918, only to be reopened in 1934, but ultimately closed again in 1938.

The story doesn’t end here. It was reopened once more in 1978, becoming a vital spiritual center for the community. Then, in 1992, it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church and once again became a fully functional religious institution. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the community that has persevered through times of strife and uncertainty.

The church’s story reminds us that even in the heart of a bustling city, there exists a place for quiet contemplation, a place where faith finds solace and resilience. You can almost hear the whispers of history carried on the winds of the city. A place where the past, present, and future intertwine, like the branches of the elm tree that once stood beside it.
