Haven’t you noticed how this seemingly ordinary green space tells a story? This is Fyodorovsky skver. It is a square in Saint Petersburg. It is located in the Frunzenskiy district. It sits between several streets. These are the Dynasty prospectus. Also the Bucharest street and the Yaroslav Gashek street. Finally, it is near Zagrebsky boulevard.
Fyodorovsky skver spans 10.04 hectares. It is named in honor of Holy Prince Feodor. The naming occurred on November 28, 2017. This was done by the Saint Petersburg government.
Before 1971, the southern Volkovka River was in Kupchino. On July 26, 1971, a decision was made. The Leningrad City Council decided to bury the canal. A green zone was created. It ran along Zagrebsky Boulevard. Soil was taken from nearby construction sites. This formed a hill. It was sometimes called “Glory Hill”.
In 2017, the green space was officially named Fyodorovsky skver. This happened despite a rule. The rule stated that the namesake must have a direct connection. There was no apparent link between Feodor and Saint Petersburg.
In 2019, the “Dunayskaya” metro station opened. It is located near the skver. In 2021, a survey was conducted. Residents ranked Fyodorovsky skver fourth. This was among 22 green areas in Saint Petersburg. It was part of a federal project. The project was called ” формирование комфортной городской среды “.
In June 2021, a stone with a quote was installed. It was from Antuan de Saint Exupery’s “The Little Prince”. In July 2022, a landscape workshop took place. It involved the “Miss Frunzensky District” competition. Ideas were gathered for the skver’s improvement.
In August 2023, work began. The skver was upgraded as part of the ” формирование комфортной городской среды ” program. In December 2023, the project won an award. It was recognized as the “Best Unrealized Project”. This was at the XIV Russian National Prize. It was for landscape architecture.
In the summer of 2024, improvements were halted. Residents noted that the project failed. It did not account for the former canal. Under a thin layer of soil, there was waste.
In November 2024, the deputy chairman spoke. She said work was suspended. This was because the canal was not identified during planning. A new project was developed. It will address the waste issue.
At the end of November 2024, work was reactivated. All trash was removed. The skver’s construction continues as planned. By August 2025, the work should be finished.
Fyodorovsky skver is more than just a park. It is a testament to history. It shows community involvement. It reflects the ongoing efforts. Efforts are to improve Saint Petersburg’s urban environment. A walk here is a journey. A journey through time and civic engagement.
