They died during World War II. In Russia it is known as the Great Patriotic War. The memorial stands as a symbol. It recognizes their sacrifice and bravery.

The \u0424\u0440\u043e\u043d\u0442\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0439 \u043c\u0435\u0434\u0441\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0435 War memorial’s history is poignant. Millions of Soviet soldiers went missing after the war. They were presumed dead. The monument was unveiled on May 8 1967. It provided a focal point for grieving families.

In 1997 a Guard of Honour was restored here. It is from the Kremlin Regiment. Previously they guarded Lenin’s Mausoleum. A Changing of the Guard ceremony happens every hour. This adds solemnity to the memorial.

The memorial has been renewed several times. For the 30th anniversary of Victory Day celebrations it was fully restored. A laurel branch and helmet by Nikolai Tomsky were added.

The flame returned to the Alexander Garden in 2010. Dmitry Medvedev attended the event. The reconstructed memorial complex opened on Victory Day. The presidents of Russia Belarus and Ukraine attended.

It states “1941 To Those Who Have Fallen For The Motherland 1945”. To the right are porphyry blocks. They contain soil from hero cities. These include Leningrad Kiev and Minsk. Further right is an obelisk. It lists the names of 40 “Cities of Military Glory”.
