Named in 1965 a street emerged. This new street in Moscow is named after the famous Russian explorer Nikolai Miklukho-Maklai. He was an anthropologist and ethnographer.

Nikolai Nikolaevich Miklukho-Maklai was born on May 17 1846. He was born into the family of an engineer. He studied science. He studied at universities in St. Petersburg Germany and Leipzig. Miklukho-Maklai dedicated himself to studying a range of scientific problems. These included the origin of life. He studied the evolution of species and the development of the organic world.

During his travels to the Canary Islands he gathered rich zoological materials. He also visited Messina. Miklukho-Maklai traveled the Red and Black Seas.

Miklukho-Maklai collected rich materials. These were zoological and comparative anatomical. At the 2nd Congress of Russian Natural Scientists he proposed organizing biological stations. He wanted them on the Black Baltic Caspian and White Seas. Also on the Volga River.

The young scientist wanted to contribute new materials to science. He had an idea. He wanted to travel to the islands of the Pacific Ocean. He wanted to study the life and customs of indigenous people. He set off on a trip around the world on the ship Vityaz in 1870. After a year he arrived at New Guinea.

He gained recognition and love from the natives. Miklukho-Maklai’s authority among the locals was great. They listened to him. Thanks to this authority he managed to stop bloody wars. He also intervened between separate groups of natives.

Miklukho-Maklai visited New Guinea five times. He lived on other islands. He compiled descriptions of the life of Papuans. He introduced Europe to the Melanesian language. He conducted anthropological research. He remained a friend to the indigenous people. He tried to protect them from exploitation. He stood up against white merchants and missionaries.

In 1887 Miklukho-Maklai returned to St. Petersburg from Australia. He died there on April 14 1888. His diaries accounts of travels scientific observations and biological research made a huge contribution to science.

During his life Miklukho-Maklai published 76 works. His expeditions brought rich collections. These ethnographic and anthropological collections are stored in the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography in St. Petersburg.

Today Miklukho-Maklaya Street is home to several notable places. At the beginning of Miklukho-Maklaya Street is the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry. It is named after M.M. Shemyakin and Yu.A. Ovchinnikov. Also located here is Children’s Polyclinic number 81.

The Diagnostic Clinical Center number 1 is located on Miklukho-Maklaya Street. The center was established in 1987. It provides diagnostic assistance to millions of people. The center is equipped with unique equipment. It has MRI X-ray and ultrasound machines. It also has biochemical analyzers. Unique studies are conducted here. These include ultrasound examinations with color Doppler mapping.
