In 1993, a unique theatre was born in St. Petersburg. It wasn’t confined by walls or a traditional stage. It was the Театр «Странствующие куклы господина Пэжо», Mr. Pejo’s Wandering Puppets. This unconventional troupe has captivated audiences for thirty years. They perform primarily on the streets, embracing a medieval tradition of masks and grotesque, interactive performances. Their mesmerizing spectacle harkens back to the European carnival. Театр «Странствующие куклы господина Пэжо» was formed in the attics of a small palace in Peterhof Park. This eclectic group of comedians included a gunsmith, tailor, puppeteer, crossbowman, and a musical instrument maker. They crafted unique props and began performing, bringing laughter and wonder to the streets of St. Petersburg. The Wandering Puppets’ performances are unscripted and improvisational. The director, Anna Shishkina, provides a concept. Then the actors, adorned in white robes and masks, bring it to life through their own creativity. The masks themselves are both beautiful and unsettling. They add to the mysterious, otherworldly atmosphere of the performances. Театр «Странствующие куклы господина Пэжо» often incorporates audience participation. This interactive element breaks the barrier between performer and spectator. It creates a shared experience of wonder and amusement. Over the years, the troupe’s fame grew. They’ve performed for dignitaries like Her Royal Highness The Princess of Kent, the Mayor of Tokyo, and the Sheikh of the United Arab Emirates. Their artistry transcends language and cultural barriers, resonating with audiences worldwide. Театр «Странствующие куклы господина Пэжо» has participated in numerous international festivals. Their talent has earned them dozens of awards. They continue to charm audiences with their unique blend of ancient traditions and contemporary artistry. They are a true testament to the power of street theatre and the enduring magic of puppets.
