Did the whispers of history ever reach your ears, speaking of a place named Obid Xoja Mausoleum? Here at the Chor Bakr memorial complex in Bukhara, this 18th-century mausoleum stands as a silent witness to centuries past. The Obid Xoja Mausoleum is more than just a beautiful structure. It’s a repository of stories, etched in stone and whispered by the winds. The mausoleum is recognized in Uzbekistan’s national register of immovable cultural heritage. This signifies its importance. The Obid Xoja Mausoleum sits opposite the Mozori Daroz gate. Access is gained through the door part of the Xoja Sa’d tomb, adding a layer of mystery to its location. Originally, protective walls enclosed the mausoleum on all sides. These walls have been meticulously repaired and plastered, their aged surfaces now smooth. A winter house graces the north side of the mausoleum, complete with a dome, columns, and a veranda. The winter house boasts doors on both its sides and on the eastern side, hinting at gatherings and quiet contemplation within its walls. Within the Obid Xoja Mausoleum, you’ll find remnants of lamp holders, though the lamps themselves are lost to time. Their presence can still be felt, casting ghostly shadows in the corners of your mind. A significant restoration in 1999 breathed new life into the Obid Xoja Mausoleum. A wall was installed 1.5 meters below ground, strengthening its foundations and anchoring it further to the past. The mausoleum holds graves and tombstones. Some of these tombstones, according to historian Ibodat Rajabova, were repurposed, carrying echoes of lives beyond those commemorated within these walls. One tombstone, dated 1755, marks the grave of Faxriya, daughter of Hazrati Eshon ibn Muhammad Obid Xoja, her journey from Dorulfanod to Dorulbaqo immortalized in the inscription. Another tombstone tells the story of Shamsiyabonu Sultonim, also known as Bibi Jo’ybori. The Jo’ybori family generously donated lands to the mausoleum, their legacy interwoven with the fabric of this place. Stand here, at the Obid Xoja Mausoleum, and let the weight of history settle upon you. Feel the cool stone beneath your fingers, imagine the flickering lamps illuminating the inscriptions, and hear the whispers of those who rest within.
