Perhaps unnoticed at first glance, this small square holds a story. It is a tribute to a remarkable ballerina. This is the Сквер Майи Плисецкой Plaque.

You can find it between buildings 12/1 and 16. Specifically, it is at building 16 корпус 1. The square’s origin is quite interesting.

Back in 2005 a private investor planned to build on this site. The area was prepared. However the construction was stopped. The new mayor of Moscow cancelled the investment contract. For a while there was only a public toilet.

After the death of Maya Plisetskaya there were suggestions to name a square in her honor. On November 20 2015 the Сквер Майи Плисецкой was officially opened.

A bronze plaque was installed. The plaque reads that the square is named after the outstanding Russian ballerina. In 2013 the Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra created a graffiti portrait of Plisetskaya on the building at 16 Bolshaya Dmitrovka. It shows her as Odette from Swan Lake. The mural was created for the Moscow Street Art Festival MOST. It was timed to coincide with the ballerina’s 88th birthday.

In 2018 the square was improved with a garden. The design was inspired by Plisetskaya’s “Carmen Suite”. Metal structures represent dance movements. A colorful garden reflects the passion of the heroine.

It is a place to sit and remember a great ballerina. It is a beautiful and unusual space in the city.
