The construction of S-1 began in 1984. It faced many challenges. The S-1 gates were finally commissioned in mid-2011. Their first real test came quickly. On November 27 of the same year, they were used to protect the city from a storm surge.
The design of the Navigation Pass S-1 is similar to the Maeslantkering barrier in the Netherlands. It features two submersible caissons. Each caisson measures 125 by 22 meters. These massive structures can close the navigable channel. This prevents storm tides from entering Neva Bay.
The channel itself is quite large. It is 200 meters wide and 16 meters deep. This allows for significant maritime traffic. The Saint Petersburg Ring Road crosses this channel. It does so via an underwater tunnel.
