Its roots, however, trace back to a Higher School of Trade Unions established in 1926. Originally designed to train trade unionists, SPbGUP’s purpose evolved over time. It transitioned into an educational center for broader social sciences. Today, the Saint Petersburg State University of Humanities and Social Sciences offers a vast range of programs. These include journalism, cultural studies, and even conflict resolution. SPbGUP boasts a student body exceeding 12,000. Its influence extends far beyond its walls. Scandals have occasionally rocked the university, adding to its colorful history. In 2000, a 17-year-old student named Igor Verkin paid the full tuition, about $1000 then, only to be denied admission due to “failing norms.” This sparked controversy, leading to legal battles and public outcry. Another scandal erupted in 2013, concerning high tuition fees and questionable financial practices. This brought intense scrutiny to the Saint Petersburg State University of Humanities and Social Sciences. The university also faced controversy in 2014. Rector Alexander Zapesotsky proposed increasing the number of fee-paying students to 150. This fueled further debate. Zapesotsky himself had been accused of plagiarism and even faced legal action in 2017 after making controversial statements about student tuition. Despite these challenges, SPbGUP has remained a significant player in higher education in Saint Petersburg.
