Evgeniya Maksimovna Rudneva was born on December 24 1920. Her birthplace was Berdyansk. She died April 9 1944 in Kerch. She was a Soviet Guards Senior Lieutenant. Rudneva was also a navigator. She earned the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

Evgeniya Maksimovna Rudneva’s life is one of remarkable dedication. She showed excellence in her studies. This later propelled her into the world of aviation.

In school Evgeniya was the secretary of the Komsomol organization. From the 9th grade she was engaged in the astronomical circle. Soon she had a firm desire to be an astronomer. In 1938 Zhenya graduated from secondary school. She then entered the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Moscow State University.

Evgeniya Rudneva simultaneously worked in the Department of the Sun. In 1939 her first scientific article was published in the journal “Bulletin of VAGO”. It was titled “Biological Observations During the Solar Eclipse of June 19 1936”.

World War II changed everything. Rudneva’s passion was astronomy. However she decided to join the military to defend her country.

In October 1941 Zhenya Rudneva joined the women’s aviation regiment. Hero of the Soviet Union Marina Raskova selected her. Rudneva’s good math skills helped her master the job.

From May 1942 Evgeniya Rudneva fought on various fronts. These included the Transcaucasian and Ukrainian fronts. She served with the 46th Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment.

Rudneva participated in battles. These battles were in the Northern Caucasus. She also fought in Taman and Kerch. She was a skilled navigator.

By the time of her death Guards Senior Lieutenant E. M. Rudneva had completed 645 night sorties. These sorties targeted enemy troops. She also aimed at railway echelons.

On the night of April 9 1944 Zhenya Rudneva died. She was on a combat mission near Kerch.

For her bravery Evgeniya Maksimovna Rudneva posthumously received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. She also received other awards.

Today Evgeniya Maksimovna Rudneva’s memory lives on. A monument stands in the territory of the Saltykovskaya Gymnasium. There is also a memorial plaque on a street. A school in Kerch bears her name. Even one of the newly discovered small planets has been named “Rudneva”.

Evgeniya Maksimovna Rudneva’s story is a reminder. It shows the courage and dedication of those who fought. Her life is a bright example of service to her country.
