“Lost things,” a wizened babushka once told me, “often find their way back in the most unexpected places.” She could have been talking about the name of St. Petersburg itself, resurrected after decades of being Leningrad. This city, nestled on the Neva River, has been reborn more than once. Tsar Peter the Great, dreaming of a “window to Europe”, founded St. Petersburg in 1703 upon a marshy, inhospitable land. He envisioned a city of canals and bridges, a grand metropolis to rival the great capitals of Europe. Little did he know the cost. Thousands of serfs perished building his dream, swallowed by the swamp, victims of disease and overwork. Yet, St. Petersburg rose, becoming a beacon of art, culture, and power. It became Russia’s capital, a position it held for over 200 years. Imagine the grandeur of the Winter Palace, the official residence of the Tsars, now part of the Hermitage Museum. Think of the opulence, the extravagance, the sheer weight of history within those walls. Later, renamed Leningrad, it endured the unimaginable. The 900-day siege during World War II, a time of starvation and unimaginable hardship, became a testament to the city’s resilience. During the siege, an army of cats was brought in to combat a plague of rats that threatened the city’s dwindling food supplies. Today, you can find bronze statues of cats, Yelisei and Vasilisa, perched on buildings along Malaya Sadovaya street, commemorating their service. St. Petersburg, having survived revolution, siege, and renaming, stands proud once more. The city of canals and bridges, of palaces and museums, a testament to the enduring spirit of its people. Its heart, like the ticking metronome that reassured its citizens during the siege, continues to beat strong.
