Ever heard of the “God of the Army”? That’s just one nickname for Prince Pyotr Ivanovich Bagration. Today we stand before a plaque dedicated to him. This plaque honors a remarkable military leader in Saint Petersburg.
Pyotr Ivanovich Bagration was a prominent Russian general. He served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Bagration’s plaque marks a location of significance in his life. It is located on Bagrationovskiy Square.
Bagration was of Georgian origin. He hailed from the Bagrationi dynasty. Born in 1765, he rose through the ranks of the Imperial Russian Army. He participated in several major conflicts. These included wars against the Ottoman Empire and campaigns in Italy and Switzerland.
Bagration distinguished himself under Field Marshal Alexander Suvorov. Suvorov recognized Bagration’s merits. Bagration’s skills were noted in the capture of Brescia and Bergamo.
In 1805, Russia joined the coalition against Napoleon. Bagration’s defense at the Battle of Schöngrabern was crucial. It allowed Russian forces to withdraw. This successful defense earned him praise. Later, Bagration commanded troops in the Finnish War and against the Turks.
During the French invasion of Russia in 1812, Bagration commanded the 2nd Army of the West. He engaged in rear-guard actions. At the Battle of Borodino, Bagration commanded the left wing. He was mortally wounded there. He died shortly after.
The monument we see today was created by sculptors Y.Y. Neyman and M. Annaliev. The architect was G.K. Chelbogoshev. The bronze sculpture stands 4 meters 35 centimeters high. It was placed on a 30-ton pedestal made of granite.
The monument’s location was carefully considered. It stands on Marata Street. This was once the parade ground of the Semyonovsky regiment. The monument was opened on September 7, 2012. This commemorated the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino.
Bagration’s legacy extends beyond this plaque. An asteroid, 3127 Bagration, is named after him. The Bagrationovskaya metro station in Moscow also honors him. He truly left his mark on military history.
