Here among the rolling hills of Porohovskoye Cemetery lies a story. It is a story of gunpowder and faith. A story woven into the very soil beneath our feet. Porohovskoye Cemetery isn’t famous. It doesn’t boast grand mausoleums or illustrious names known throughout Russia. Yet its quiet beauty holds a unique charm. A testament to the lives of ordinary people. People whose work shaped a nation.

This peaceful resting place. This Porohovskoye Cemetery. It’s actually the third cemetery on this very site. The first was humble. Nestled beside the wooden Church of St Prophet Elijah. Built in the early 1720s. It served the workers of the nearby Ohtinskiy Powder Factory. A place where the making of gunpowder was a dangerous business. A place where death was an ever-present shadow.

That first small cemetery. That little patch of earth where the first Porohovskoye Cemetery stood. Became insufficient. By the late 1770s a new cemetery was needed. It was built near the factory dam. The old one wasn’t closed though. Burials continued there in special cases. Amazingly enough traces of it remained visible until the 1930s.

The second Porohovskoye Cemetery met a dramatic end. In 1816 a military settlement was established at the factory. The land was re-organized. The cemetery was erased. Its resting place was replaced by barracks.

Finally in the early 1820s Porohovskoye Cemetery found its permanent home. Here at the confluence of Gorely Creek and the Luby River. A location far more tranquil than its predecessors.

Look closely at the Monument to the Fallen Powder Workers. Notice its unusual base. Fourteen stone millstones support the granite cross. These aren’t just any millstones. These are authentic millstones used in gunpowder production. They lay at the foot of the Ohtinskiy Powder Factory dam for almost a century. Protecting the riverbed. Before being recovered for this memorial unveiled in 1890.

The inscription reads “What is man that thou art mindful of him One hour and all passes”. A sobering reminder of the fleeting nature of life. Especially in a profession as hazardous as making gunpowder. The monument. A symbol of remembrance. A silent tribute to those who lost their lives. In service of their country.

Porohovskoye Cemetery isn’t just graves. It’s a chronicle. A history etched in stone and earth. It reflects the lives of skilled workers. Their families and soldiers. Most were buried with simple wooden crosses. Many have disappeared over time. But the spirit of those buried here remains.

Mass graves mark the impact of war. The Great Patriotic War left its mark on Porohovskoye. The cemetery holds the remains of fallen soldiers and civilians. A stark reminder of the human cost of conflict.

Today Porohovskoye Cemetery is a place of quiet contemplation. It is a place of reflection. It’s a reminder of the lives lived and lost. In the service of a nation. It is a hidden gem of Saint Petersburg. A place where history and nature intertwine. A place where the stories of ordinary people. Live on. In the whispers of the wind. Among the gently rolling hills.
