Have you ever wondered about the history of the Krasnye Vorota square? It’s a place where time has left its mark on the cityscape. Located in the heart of Moscow, Krasnye Vorota was once a thriving hub where a majestic archway, built in the 1700s, stood proud.

They say the arch, known as the Red Gate, was erected in 1709 to commemorate the triumph of Russian troops in the Battle of Poltava. This was a pivotal moment in Russian history, marking a significant victory against the Swedish Empire. Over the years, the Red Gate witnessed a parade of historical events, including the coronation of Empress Catherine I in 1724.

However, the Red Gate met a rather unfortunate fate. In the 1920s, the Soviet government decided to expand the Garden Ring, a major thoroughfare in Moscow. The Red Gate was demolished in 1927 despite protests from renowned artists and architects. Fortunately, some artifacts, including a magnificent statue of an angel, were preserved in the Museum of Moscow.

Although the Red Gate no longer graces the square, its legacy persists. In 1935, a subway station bearing the same name, Krasnye Vorota, was built on the square, further cementing its significance. Today, Krasnye Vorota square is a bustling intersection, serving as a reminder of the changes that Moscow has undergone. While the Red Gate may be gone, its story stands as a testament to the grandeur of the past and the dynamic evolution of Moscow’s urban landscape.
