“To Great Grandfather from Great Grandson” These words etched into the pedestal before us whisper a tale of legacy and ambition. This is the Monument to Peter I. It stands proudly before St Michael’s Castle a testament to the enduring power of a single man.

Emperor Peter the Great commissioned Carlo Bartolomeo Rastrelli to create this magnificent bronze equestrian statue. The statue commemorates Russia’s victories over Sweden. Rastrelli spent eight years crafting the model. Peter approved it in 1724. Unfortunately Peter died the following year. The statue’s casting was only completed in 1747. It sat in a warehouse for 53 years.

Another monument to Peter the Great already existed. The Bronze Horseman was commissioned by Catherine the Great. Catherine linked her name to Peter’s. This reflected her desire to be seen as his rightful heir. Her claim to the throne was less than secure after all. She had come to power through a palace coup.

Finally in 1800 Emperor Paul I erected the Monument to Peter I. It sits upon a pedestal of Finnish marble. The marble is decorated with bas-reliefs. These scenes depict the battles of Poltava and Hangö. These victories made Russia a dominant power in Northern Europe. Peter himself led his troops in both battles.

Paul I’s inscription a subtle nod to Catherine’s dedication on the Bronze Horseman. It cleverly links them both to Peter the Great.

The statue’s journey didn’t end there. During World War II it was removed for safety. It was protected from the 900 day German siege of Leningrad. In 1945 it returned to its rightful place.

Today the Monument to Peter I stands as a powerful symbol. It embodies Peter’s ambition and Russia’s rise to prominence. It is a symbol of power resilience and a legacy that continues to inspire awe. Let us take a moment to reflect on this impressive piece of history.
